SCAP Residency with Scott Redford

23/04/09

In May as winner of the SCAP '08 Scott Redford is about to begin his residency as part of the Prize’s substantial $20,000 prize pool. A unique feature of the Prize, this year’s artist residency takes place in the month of May at The Old Dairy, Arley Farm, Maleny, about one hour north of Brisbane. Redford’s work has always challenged views of contemporary art but no more so than his ongoing ’project’ focused on fictional character Reinhardt Dammn. Reinhardt Dammn surfs, paints and plays in a band. He is young, talented and defiant. There is sophistication and almost paranoia to his work as he trys to break into the ‘art world’. Working through Reinhardt, Redford comments on the unavoidable duplicity of modern art and the power struggle evident in this seemingly elitist and aristocratic industry. The focus of this residency will be developing the Reinhardt character through video projects and more paintings. While details are still to be confirmed, there may be a process of screen-testing and involvement from the arts and film community already active on the Sunshine Coast.  Redford’s winning painting from last year’s Sunshine Coast Art Prize related to a wider concept of a feature film that is currently being written. The painting is meant to be a prop for that film. Redford who calls Brisbane home is currently working in London but is excited at the prospect of working in a regional coastal area again and progressing the concepts of Reinhardt with the impact of his recent influences from overseas.    The Sunshine Coast Art Prize 09 has now closed applications for its 2009 exhibition with the forty finalists set to coincide with Scott’s residency in May. This is the Prize’s fourth consecutive year and with winners such as Scott Redford it is attracting national acclaim for its representation of contemporary Australian art.
