SCAP 2009 Judge announced

05/12/08

Heading into its fourth year, The Sunshine Coast Art Prize has announced that this year’s judge will be acclaimed gallery director and philanthropist Philip Bacon. Phillip established the Philip Bacon Galleries in Brisbane in 1974. The gallery was housed in a converted tile warehouse and soon established itself as Brisbane’s leading commercial art gallery attracting national attention.

Philip Bacon has embraced and nurtured the arts and cultural scene in Australia. He has served as Art Consultant to Expo 88 and on many boards and foundations, including those of Opera Australia and the National Gallery of Australia. In 1999, he was made a Member, Order of Australia for services to the visual and performing arts.

Philip Bacon Galleries plays an educational and commercial role in the thriving Brisbane art scene. The depth of its stockroom collection, historical and contemporary exhibitions shown monthly and long-term relationship with major Australian and emerging artists has established the gallery as the largest and most prestigious in Brisbane. Philip Bacon Galleries has evolved to become a major public art space.

The Sunshine Coast Art Prize is very fortunate to have Philip Bacon as this year’s judge and we are excited at the prospect of working with such a well respected art patron.
