One of Australia’s most exciting Art Prizes launches its 5th year!
18/01/10
The Sunshine Coast Art Prize is proving its staying power and commitment to contemporary Australian artists. About to enter its fifth consecutive year, the Prize has achieved national acclaim for its annual representation of contemporary Australian art. It is one of the richest acquisition prizes in Australia with the winner receiving a $20,000 cash and residency prize. And entries are now being sought from across the country. The prize is exhibited at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery, Queensland which is also celebrating its 10th Anniversary. This 2D art award attracts a dynamic range of mediums and artists. Past winners include Shane Pickett, Tony Albert, Scott Redford and Peter Hudson all of whom applaud the opportunity the Prize provides. ‘Every year the artists who participate are of an extremely high standard whether they are younger emerging artists or more established professionals’, said John Waldron, Cultural, Heritage and Collections Manager for the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. As with previous years forty finalists will be selected to exhibit. Applicants are encouraged to utilize the online application system specifically designed for the Prize. This year the Prize is fortunate to have national art critic and writer John McDonald as its Judge. For over twenty years McDonald has been one of Australia's best-known art critics, writing a weekly column for the Sydney Morning Herald, and contributing to local and international publications. With often strong comments to make on the state of contemporary Australian art, his views on this year’s Prize will be keenly watched. As well as the substantial incentive of a $15,000 cash prize, a 4-week residency in the Sunshine Coast hinterland is included in the Prize. The residency is an important component to the Prize as it not only provides a fantastic opportunity to work in a unique environment but offers the Sunshine Coast community an insight into this artist’s work. Entries close on 31 March and a $25 entry fee applies. To apply online or for more details go to www.scap.org.au.
